Hi-Yo, Silver! The Lone Ranger is perhaps vintage radio drama's single most famous creation. Yet the Masked Man's formative years from 1933 until 1938 are essentially lost to us because no recordings were made. Original scripts DO survive, and Project Audion has selected episode #266 (out of nearly 3000!) from October 12 1934 to recreate. In 1934 the Lone Ranger and Tonto are not quite as we remember them, and the story -- featuring a cattle rancher, the coming of the railroad, and a "greasy half-breed" named Magdalena -- is rough-edged, less sensitive and streamlined than in later years. But this was the Lone Ranger that took the country by storm during the Great Depression. Now, for the first time in nine decades, this early version of the Lone Ranger rides again! The cross-country cast of Project Audion's transcribed-live recreation includes Lone Ranger: Dennis Thompson Tonto: Ken Raney Announcer: Greg Vestal Steve Greencliff: Norman Cline Magdalena: Pete Lutz Tad Brewster: Scott McKinley Gwendolyn Wiggs: Angela Young Mother Wiggs: Sharon Grunwald Father Jerimy Wiggs: Chuck Daugherty Larry Groebe produced, directed, and cleaned up after the horses. |

PROJECT AUDION 4 - Gunsmoke: "The Guitar" Project Audion presents a recreation of the vintage radio show Gunsmoke. Gunsmoke, one of the classic "adult Westerns", had a ten-year run on radio and an astounding 20+ years on television. This early episode, "The Guitar", originally aired December 26, 1953 and was later remade on both the television and radio series. A simple man with an unexpected talent is taunted by town bullies, with tragic results. Project Audion is a collaboration of radio theatre actors from across North America recording OTR shows live via Zoom. This Audion episode features the talents of Dennis Thompson in Colorado, Doug Fain in Kentucky, Paul Arbisi in Illinois, Dan Keenan in Colorado, Norman Cline in Kentucky, Pete Lutz in Texas, Denise Cline in Kentucky, Dick Huitema in Florida, Tim Burns in Kansas, Darren Rockhold in Illinois, and Larry Groebe in Texas. Doug Fain directed and Larry Groebe produced it. |

Old-time Radio Essentials continues its 3rd season with an episode of the Lux Radio Theatre – their adaptation of the Western film "Red River", starring John Wayne! This one's Pete's pick, and there's action a-plenty in the selection, followed by fast-paced discussion of its merits by the three co-hosts. Will Pete and Paul have a Walter Brennan voice-off, reluctantly judged by Dave? Tune in and find out!! (NARADA RADIO COMPANY) And since we're on the subject of finding things out, while you listen you'll learn if we feel this entry meets the following criteria: 1. Is it truly representative of that series? (Can anyone point to it and say, "Yes, that is what [NAME OF SERIES] was all about.") 2. Is it an episode worthy of inclusion in any and every OTR aficionado's private collection? So with this in mind, we three bring you, as our thirty-second number (but 7th official episode of S3), this episode of Lux Radio Theatre, from 3/3/49. We'll introduce the show, play it in its entirety, then discuss it at length. Thanks for joining us, and we hope you enjoy it! Please show your support of the podcast by doing any of the following! To comment on how we might improve OTR-E, or give suggestions for future discussions, please write to us at f6point3@gmail.com . Put the word "Essentials" in the subject line. Your feedback means a lot to us! A review at iTunes or at your usual podcatcher would be appreciated. Next Time: Dave's pick, and all he'll tell us is that it's in the Sci-Fi genre!

It's episode two of a new, limited anthology series from 63audio and the Narada Radio Company! Adventure Trail brings back to the Narada microphone The Old-Timer, a character first heard way back in the first season of Pulp-Pourri Theatre. He's back after all this time to spin a few yarns and tell some tall tales about adventures he's had over his long life, and this second outing is a prime example. Set in the 1940s or thereabouts, in "Demon an' Pithypuss" we hear about a pair of ranch hands (Rowdy Ransom and Mac McCorkadale) who are such close friends, that one can't itch without the other one scratchin', to hear Ol' Duff Moser, the ramrod, tell it. Mac and Rowdy are sure-fire winners in the upcoming rodeo's steer-tying competition, but their other event, a ballad-singing contest, causes their friendship (and rodeo partnership) to fall apart when they find they can't agree on the "right" words to an old song. With all the other hands' wages tied up in bets, things look pretty dire, and the other cowboys try all kinds of ways to bring these two back together. CAST: Gene Giggy as THE OLD-TIMER Les Marsden as DUFF MOSER John Bell as EDITOR STRAWN Norman Cline as ROWDY RANSOM David Ian as MAC McCORKADALE Eugene Lutz as PINCH-POCKET PATTERSON Mark Kalita as LINK CASSIDY Pete Lutz as BIG-NOSE GEORGE and NICK SHORTRIDGE Jordan Bruster as JOE CLARK Dana Gonsalves as AB BUNKER With additional voices by Glenn Higbee, Glenn Hascall, and members of the cast.
