Continuing our special run of Christmas and holiday shows, we proudly present the Narada Radio Company and their solitary holiday offering -- but it's a lulu, kiddies!

Based on the hit stage play by George S. Kaufman and Moss Hart, and adapted for radio several times in the 1940s (and from two of which productions ours is derived), The Man Who Came to Dinner is a rollicking comedy that tells the story of a tyrannical celebrity who gets injured around Christmastime in a small town in Ohio; and of his eventual comeuppance by his friends and loved ones. Filled with colorful characters and comical situations, this is a Holiday Treat that can't be beat.

Adapted from the 1949 Hotpoint Holiday Hour and 1950 Lux Radio Theatre broadcasts, directed and produced by Pete Lutz. For entertainment purposes only, no infringement is intended. Our Narada Radio Company players were...

Continuing our special run of Christmas and holiday shows, we proudly present the latest release from our friends at Project Audion: My True Story: A Christmas to Remember.

Project Audion's December classic radio recreation is a lost episode from a virtually-lost series - how’s that for a Christmas present from the past! “My True Story" was on the air from 1943 to 1962 on three networks, but it's all but forgotten today, as maybe 10 vintage recordings survive from perhaps 5,000 original broadcasts!

A daily cousin to the daytime soap operas, "My True Story" produced a nearly hour-long complete drama five days a week - an astonishing achievement. Our Christmas Eve 1958 episode (#3,833), also titled "The Orphan In The Auditorium," asked the question, "What happens to a child who unexpectedly meets Santa Claus?"

It's full of poignant, heart-tugging emotion for the holidays, and was recreated from an original script saved by the 10 year old actress who played “Dot,” with a far-flung Zoom-based cast performing live…

This one's Pete's pick, or rather, that of his special guest, Essential Listener Noah Diamond*. Noah's an actor, author, podcaster, Marxian Scholar, and off-Broadway Groucho impersonator, not to mention a very funny guy, so you can imagine the discussion of this episode's merits by Noah and our three co-hosts will be sparkling and rapid-fire and exceptionally funny. "We Offer You...Escape!" -- starting in 1947 for seven years, the CBS show delivered on that promise. Using some of the finest directors and voice actors, and drawing on the world's great adventure stories, Escape has legions of devoted fans seven decades on. Out of 240 episodes, 10 recordings have been lost to time. "The Run of the Yellow Mail", the show's 2nd nationally-broadcast episode, is one of those: not heard since its single live broadcast October 8, 1947. "Yellow Mail" is a fast-moving adventure yarn about the early days of the railroads out west.

Project Audion has faithfully recreated it from a surviving script via live transcription using a transcontinental voice cast brought together via Zoom:

Project Audion presents a recreation of the radio series "My True Story." Imagine compressing a whole soap opera storyline into about 45 minutes -- that's "My True Story" -- full of love, heartbreak, and triumph five days a week for nearly 20 years starting in 1943. But only a dozen or so episodes survive out of literally thousands that were broadcast, so this is a chance to hear a show you never knew about.

Our episode from October 30, 1958 is entitled "Mother's Little Witch" and asks the question: "Can a woman, unequipped to earn her living, make a good life for herself and her child?" Our transcontinentally transcribed cast stars Jessica Matthews, Dorothy and John Farrington, Bob Beaumont, Jan Welch, and Duane Noch.

Rachel Pulliam directed, and Larry Groebe produced and provided music.

Horror Fest '22: Project Audion 35: Midworld

In this specially curated collection for Halloween 2022, we will be presenting a wide selection of old-time radio (and other) horror programs. For our sixth, we are proud to present a remake of a radio play that was broadcast only once, in 1939: MIDWORLD, "Return of the Werewolf", from the Texas State Network.

Horror stories work so well as audio drama because all the awful deeds take place in your mind's eye. That's why radio spawned such classic shows as Lights Out, Quiet Please, Inner Sanctum, and...Midworld? Project Audion brings back to life a late-night radio horror show that has been dead for 83 years: a series which was only heard on the two dozen stations of the then-new Texas State Network. A single Midworld script is all that survives from it - a tale of werewolves and ghosts set in the Canadian wilderness. This is the first time the show has been performed since 1939. Watch our voice actors from across the US perform via Zoom, or close your eyes and just listen...if you dare!

CAST:

Bob Beaumont in California

George Taylor in Tennessee

Frank Guglielmeli in Pennsylvania

and helmed and produced by Larry Groebe in Texas

Horror Fest '22: Stay Tuned for Terror (double-feature)

In this specially curated collection for Halloween 2022, we will be presenting a wide selection of old-time radio (and other) horror programs. For our fifth, we are proud to present the only two known-to-exist episodes of the series "Stay Tuned for Terror", written, selected and adapted by Robert Bloch. So here we present, as a single installment, episodes 31 and 32 of that late 1940s series:

"The Boogey Man Will Get You" and "Lizzie Borden Took an Axe".

HORROR FEST '22: Something Wicked This Way Comes by Ray Bradbury

Composer ..... David Paul Jones
Sound ..... Paul Cargill
Produced/Directed by Pauline Harris

Set in 1960's Illinois this gem of modern Gothic literature is the memorable story of two boys, James Nightshade and William Halloway, and the evil that grips their small Midwestern town with the arrival of a "dark carnival" one Autumn midnight. These two innocents, both aged 13, (Will is born one minute before Halloween, and Jim one minute after) save the souls of the town (as well as their own). This is a vivid variation on the eternal theme of the fight between Good and Evil. A thrilling, chilling, richly kaleidoscopic sound world ensues; a shimmering mirror maze that reflects your older or younger self, depending on your desires, and a magic carousel that plays Chopin's Funeral March forwards - with each rotation you gain a year, and rotating backwards - you get younger.

His comedy and satirical influence can be seen in everything from Looney Tunes to Saturday Night Live. Robert L. Today is a good day to listen to Bad Day at Black Rock, Project Audion's latest radio drama recreation. We're going far afield with this 1959 show, because by this time in America, television had killed off the great radio movie adaptation series like "Lux Radio Theatre." In other countries like Australia, radio drama still thrived through shows like Caltex Theatre. They adapted Bad Day at Black Rock from the gritty, Oscar-nominated 1955 drama with Spencer Tracy, where one man takes on a dying town that harbors a dirty secret. Now Project Audion recreates it with a transcribed-live coast-to-coast cast which includes:

(Orig. rel. 6/4/21) Project Audion premieres our latest recreation - a lost episode of On Stage. No recordings exist of this OTR drama from July 1954, so Patte Rosebank in Canada and Tim Burns in Kansas are stepping into the roles that Cathy and Elliott Lewis played on the original broadcast, assisted by Trevor Rines in Canada with music and FX from Larry Groebe in Texas. On Stage was an anthology series created by (and for) the Lewises, who had appeared on so many radio shows they became known as "Mr. and Mrs. Radio." In this episode, "Interlude", two lost and lonely adults who find each other one in a bar one night, and find the paths of their lives changed. This Audion recreation was directed by Patte Rosebank and produced by Larry Groebe.

(Orig. rel. 3/5/21) Project Audion's latest production recreates a vintage episode of "Destination X" called "Requiem", an adaptation of a short story by science fiction master Robert Heinlein. In our 21st-century world, when it's been over 50 years since we first set foot on the moon, it's fascinating to revisit a time when we had yet to even send a man into space. What dreams might drive a man to reach the moon and the stars? Dimension X gave us answers in this episode from September 1951.

Our North American cast includes:

Bob Beaumont in California

Marty Bufalini in Michigan

Larry Groebe in Texas

Lesley Marberry in Tennessee

John Mauldin in Tennessee

Brad Oxnam in Tennessee

Jacob Palka in Illinois

Rachel Pulliam in Missouri

Sound Effects were by Ken Rainey in Texas, and John Mauldin directed.

And since we're on the subject of discussion, we hope to determine whether this entry meets the following criteria:

1. Is it truly representative of that series? (Can anyone point to it and say, "Yes, that is what [NAME OF SERIES] was all about.")

2. Is it an episode worthy of inclusion in any and every OTR aficionado's private collection?

So with this in mind, we three bring you, as our twenty-fifth number (but 12th official episode of S2), this episode of Tales of the Texas Rangers from 1950. Premiering on Project Audion, a brand-new episode of "The Edgar Bergen and Charlie McCarthy Show" that sounds just as if an unknown script from 1940 had suddenly turned up. That's just how spot-on is the writing in this tribute penned for Project Audion by former Bob Hope comedy writer Robert L Mills.

Charlie and Edgar come up against W. C. Fields as well as a snarky agent from the IRS who sounds suspiciously like the unmistakable voice of Frank Nelson. It's our tribute to that most improbable of vintage radio's hit shows - a radio comedy starring a ventriloquist. Close your eyes and listen, then rewind to watch how our coast-to-coast cast (pictured here) handled the transcribed-live performance. Delightful summertime entertainment that speaks for itself!

Participants in this show included:

Robert L. Mills in California

Duane Noch in New Jersey

Pete Lutz in Texas

Bob Beaumont in California

Paul Arbisi in Illinois and

JoAnne Kurman in California

Robert L. Mills penned the script, while Larry Groebe produced and handled the audio from Texas.

Vianelli as Captain Thune, Stephanie Stearns Dulli as the Witch Queen Azora, Pete Lutz as Sal. Also starring Kurtis Bedford as Zug and starring Pete Handelman as the announcer and Hawkman with a hose. PROJECT AUDION #30, Season 3 Premiere!

Out of more than 900 episodes that the classic radio thriller Suspense produced between 1942 and 1962, there are 13 shows that are missing, and OTR researchers have tried for years to track them down. One of the missing 13 is "The Eavesdropper," which aired just once - January 3, 1956. No recording has ever been found. Thanks to Suspense historian Dr. Joe Webb, Project Audion is able to recreate "The Eavesdropper" so you can hear it for the first time in more than 65 years - a story of a high-rise murder plot that was discovered and which leads to a double execution.

Our transcribed-live recreation features a cast that reaches from Hollywood, California to Toronto, Canada. Watch and listen as we hope to keep you in...Suspense!

CAST:

Duane Noch, New Jersey

This Project Audion vintage radio recreation is an hour-long dramatization of George Orwell's Nineteen Eighty-Four...which was originally produced in August 1949, just months after the book, to great acclaim, was released. NBC University Theater adapted this scathing vision of a possible future where "Freedom is Slavery" and "Big Brother is watching you." Big Brother is part of our cultural currency now, but in 1949, "1984" was a new and daring novel, and this early audio adaptation feels fresh - and still terrifying.

It's episode two of a new, limited anthology series from 63audio and the Narada Radio Company! Adventure Trail brings back to the Narada microphone The Old-Timer, a character first heard way back in the first season of Pulp-Pourri Theatre. He's back after all this time to spin a few yarns and tell some tall tales about adventures he's had over his long life, and this second outing is a prime example. Set in the 1940s or thereabouts, in "Demon an' Pithypuss" we hear about a pair of ranch hands (Rowdy Ransom and Mac McCorkadale) who are such close friends, that one can't itch without the other one scratchin', to hear Ol' Duff Moser, the ramrod, tell it. Mac and Rowdy are sure-fire winners in the upcoming rodeo's steer-tying competition, but their other event, a ballad-singing contest, causes their friendship (and rodeo partnership) to fall apart when they find they can't agree on the "right" words to an old song. With all the other hands' wages tied up in bets, things look pretty dire, and the other cowboys try all kinds of ways to bring these two back together.

Gene Giggy as THE OLD-TIMER

Les Marsden as DUFF MOSER

John Bell as EDITOR STRAWN

Originally released 5/29/20. Transcribed live from California, Colorado, Florida, Illinois, Kentucky, Tennesee, and Texas... Project Audion presents a recreation of the 1937 Columbia Workshop broadcast of "R.U.R: Rossum's Universal Robots."

Pete Lutz of Narada Radio Company, director of this radio drama, says this about his choice of show: "I love the historical sense of the story. Here's Carel Kapek, in 1920 or 21, foreseeing AI, prophesying humans' dependence on technology. Of course, robots themselves, thank the gods, haven't been perfected to the same extent. But there are so many wonderful elements in the story: all the men on the island are in love with Helena, and this unrequited love felt by Dr. Gall leads to their downfall. The robots evolve in different ways, though: some become murderous, yet two show more humane tendencies: love, compassion, sacrifice. I first heard the BBC's radio adaptation of this, which was about two hours long. Then I found the script we use here and felt that the main points of the story were covered sufficiently in a half-hour. It's exciting, dramatic, and sentimental. Columbia Workshop had geniuses working for them."

Project Audion is a collection of voice actors from across North America who are recreating classic shows from Radio's Golden Age via videoconference .

"Yours Truly, Johnny Dollar" - that was both the title and the closing phrase of each episode of this well-loved crime drama, which aired on CBS for over 800 episodes and 13 years. The setup was always a big insurance settlement that will have to be shelled out... unless "America's fabulous freelance insurance investigator" can crack the case open - which he invariable does.

Project Audion's transcribed-live episode recreates the fourth-ever show from March 11, 1949, before the more-familiar cliches of the series took over.

Charles Russell played Johnny Dollar 73 years ago, but OUR transcontinental cast includes:

JOHNNY DOLLAR: Kim Titus, TX

ANNOUNCER: Geoffrey Mark, CA

LOUISA PEPPER: Jan Welch, NC

MYRTLE PEPPER: Rhiannon McAfee, CA

SHANTY BRENNAN: Greg McAfee, CA

It was directed by Joe Mendell from England, and Production was by Larry Groebe in Dallas Texas

A small town carnie with big ambitions is spooked and intrigued by the uncanny abilities of a mysterious old man living under the carnival fairgrounds.

Tierney’s Tales of Terror Writing Competition

Deadline: May 19th 2022, 11pm CST.

  2. Your script must be free of visual cues.
  3. Approximately 25-30 minutes (20-30 pages) in length (OR two 15 minute plays as 1 double-feature)

AROUND THE WORLD IN 80 DAYS - Originally released 10/2/20

Project Audion's live-transcribed cross-continental Zoom-based production for October [2020] is an episode from Orson Welles' Mercury Theatre On the Air from 1938. No, not the "War of the Worlds" which everyone knows, but "Around the World in 80 Days" which aired the week before. Welles, John Houseman, and Howard Koch condensed Jules Verne's 1872 novel into a fast-paced 60 minutes, and fewer than 20 characters (which we handle by doubling each actor's part.) Phileas Fogg's journey started October 2, 1872 at about 9 PM: Project Audion's recreation premieres exactly 148 years later!

In our sterling cast:

Paul Arbisi / Illinois

John Bell / Alabama

Norman Cline / Kentucky

Aileen Corpos / Texas

Dana Gonsalves / Texas

Larry Groebe / Texas

ORIG. REL. 5/31/20 with the following commentary:

WELCOME TO SEASON TWO OF OLD-TIME RADIO ESSENTIALS!

Well, friends, here we are, two or three (or four) months into this COVID-19 pandemic, so Paul, Dave and I decided to kick off our second season with something reflecting the times. And so we present "The Peoria Plague", a one-shot original radio drama about an alien invasion and deadly plague that was produced by radio station WUHN in Peoria, Illinois, in 1972. While it has familiar overtones of "The War of the Worlds" 1938 broadcast, this program seems to have had no effect whatsoever to radio audiences of its day -- we could find nothing that reported how listeners reacted. Anyway, we three discuss that and many other things about this broadcast, and we hope you enjoy it. Remember to stay safe, keep your social distance, and DON'T DRINK THE TAP WATER! (P.S. watch out for Zombies...)

The Saint - "the Robin Hood of modern crime" and star of scores of books, TV shows, movies, and also a well-remembered radio series - is Project Audion's latest radio recreation. Vincent Price was urbanely brilliant as Simon Templar on the radio, but he only came to the show in 1947. The first series aired in 1945 with Edgar Barrier, and no recordings exist.

Project Audion's vintage script of the episode "The Million Dollar Day" was only the 4th-ever episode. This Saint has sidekicks! We were also lucky to speak with Saint expert Ian Dickerson in England for a pre-show interview, and doubly lucky to locate a still-working SONOVOX (and experienced operator Ken Justiss) to recreate the once-famous sound effect of the "Bromo-Seltzer Train."

Our transcontinental transcription recording session was challenged by electrical storms and some camera glitches, but we pulled it off!

Our cast includes:

THE SAINT: Les Marsden, CA

HOPPY/JANITOR: Pete Lutz, TX

PATRICIA: Rhiannon McAfee, CA

MONTEIRO: Dana Gonsalves, TX

KUZELA: Frank Guglielmelli, PA

FERNACK/ANNOUNCER: John Bell, AL
