Project Audion presents a special Christmas audio comedy recorded before a live audience at the Grapevine (TX) Public Library on December 14, 2025 as part of "Christmas On The Air."

This show recreates a special Christmas episode of a beloved British radio sitcom, "The Men From the Ministry” which was extremely popular during the 1960s and 1970s (and still re-run today). The show satirized governmental bureaucracy, but it only aired a single Christmas episode, in December 1964. That recording was subsequently lost or wiped, sao Project Audion, performing from the delightfully funny original script, is bringing back to life something which NO ONE has heard in over 60 years! Listen as two bumbling bureaucrats attempt to spread a little Christmas cheer  with their plans to deliver "A Present for Norman."

Project Audion presents a special Christmas audio drama recorded before a live audience at the Grapevine (TX) Public Library on December 14, 2025 as part of "Christmas On The Air."

This half hour recreates a "A Christmas Carol" as it was traditionally heard on on the radio networks in the days before television. For nearly two decades spread across across the 1930s, 1940s, and 1950s, actor Lionel Barrymore definitively portrayed Ebenezer Scrooge  for eager American radio listeners. We recreated his 1949 production with a full cast, right down to Tiny Tim, plus music and live sound effects. It's the voices of Christmas past, here as your Christmas present.

PROJECT AUDION 76: The Bob Hope Pepsodent Show

Bob Hope was one of the 20th century's greatest and most famous entertainers: in vaudeville and movies, and especially his radio (and later TV) comedies, so often performed in front of appreciative US servicemen, kept America smiling for better than six decades. He became an icon of American humor, and it is a special challenge indeed to bring the Hope style back to life. But now Project Audion premieres a "new" 1940s-era Bob Hope radio show -- thanks to the pen of former Hope writer Robert L. Mills, the vocal wizardry of Bill Johnson, and Project Audion's versatile voice actors.

In this new Christmas creation, Bob's guest star is Lana Turner, who joins him to spoof the classic movie "Double Indemnity." It's a show guaranteed to make you smile!

Our Cast:

Bill Johnson in Nevada

Stephanie Johnson in Virginia

Les Marsden in California

Jacob Palka In Illinois

Bethany Baldwin in South Carolina

Dane Allred in Utah

The show was written by Bob Mills in California and produced and directed by Larry Groebe from Texas

PROJECT AUDION 72: Jimmy Durante - Garry Moore Show

Jimmy Durante: so famous for so many decades that just a caricature of his face was enough to elicit a smile. His outsized "Schnozz" matched the outsized personality from the 1920s through the 1970s. Even today, when his name and face are no longer common currency, his catchphrases and songs have endured. You can hear Durante singing in the "Joker" movie of 2019, imitated in lines from the "Lion King," and showing up every year in animated Christmas specials.

In this Audion Original, Pete Lutz revisits this unique talent, imagining a 1940s episode of the Jimmy Durante Comedy Caravan with his on-air partner Garry Moore, and guest stars Sydney Greenstreet and Rose Marie. "Everybody wants ta' get inta de act!" and they do for a half hour of mirth and music.

Pete Lutz, in Texas, as Jimmy Durante

Bob Beaumont, in California, as Garry Moore

Scott McKinley, in New Jersey, as Sidney Greenstreet

Jessica Matthews, in Texas, as Rose Marie

Laura Mirsky in New Jersey, as Vera Vague

PROJECT AUDION 64: Philip Marlowe, "The Three Wise Guys"

Project Audion’s Christmas gift this year is a lost episode of the classic detective drama The Adventures of Philip Marlowe with a holiday theme! Because Audion's previous Philip Marlowe restoration became its most popular episode ever, we returned to our archives to unearth a Marlowe script which hasn't been performed or heard since December 19, 1948 -- "The Three Wise Guys." The Adventures of Philip Marlowe ran for three years on network radio, with new noir-ish tales from author Raymond Chandler's detective. In this episode, it was the night before Christmas and (as Marlowe says) "a sweet girl was in trouble.  But that didn't mean a thing to the second-story man, the four-flusher in spats, and the ex-Chicago cabbie -- until, one way or the other, they all got into the spirit of the thing..." Our cast, which recorded this episode live in the classic radio drama style, included:

Andy Hartson-Bowyer in Virginia
Tom Konkle in California
Hunter Adkins in Maryland
Gregg McAfee in California
Jessica Matthews in Texas
Rhiannon McAfee in California
Donna Patton in Tennessee
Paul Kovit in New York
Music, sounds, production, direction by Larry Groebe

SANTA CLAUS CONQUERS THE MARTIANS, based on the 1964 film and adapted/produced/directed by Pete Lutz

Martians are worried that their children are being influenced by Earth trends, so they visit the planet's wise man, who tells them that they should let their children be children, and the Earthling Santa Claus isn't such a bad thing, so their decision is to travel to Earth and kidnap the jolly old elf.

The original film has been described as one of the worst films ever made, and as a result has been spoofed by theatrical companies all over the U.S. Well, the Narada Radio Company is no exception -- originally planned for a live production in December of 2024, Murphy's Law held true and strong, so they recorded it in the director's living room instead, and said director edited the voice tracks on Saturday, December 21st, and mixed all of the music and SFX on Sunday, December 22nd. Now, if you don't like the finished product...the director wishes you a very Merry Christmas.

This play would not have been possible without the following voice talents:

Mario Aguilar as Kimar
Cassandra Paige as Cowgirl Imelda, Winky, and Girmar
Dana Gonsalves as Santa Claus, Slobo, and Martian Foreman
Pete Lutz as Cowboy Dennis, Cho-Chim and Dr. Werner von Green
Lisa Espinoza McGrew as News Anchor, Hargo, Martian and Elf
Pam Pailes as Radio Announcer and Momar
Dawn E. Robertson as Betty and Mrs. Claus
Merilee Robinson as Billy and Dennis's Maw
Richard Robinson as Dropo
Carl Thomas as Henderson, Lomas and Torg
Bobby Vela as Announcer and Rigna
Tammy Weidemann as Bomar and Shim, and
Nick Wommack as Kid-TV announcer and Voldar

Certain music passages by Dr. Ross Bernhardt; other music sourced from the public domain.

EXTRA! EXTRA! Read all about it! Big Story radio drama recreated by Project Audion!

Newspaper reporters were once heroic figures - exposing rackets and corruption, taking down the powerful and giving voice to the powerless. The "Big Story" series from audio drama's original classic era (the mid 20th century) celebrated the newspaper reporter - selecting true headlines and converting them into gripping dramas, much like Dragnet did with police.

Audion's December offering is a story set during the Christmas holiday, and while there IS an appearance by Santa Claus and a happy ending - this is a drama, pure and simple - of murder, greed, and redemption. Hmmm…maybe a Christmas theme after all! Our cast reaches from Canada to across the United states to recreate this lost original script just as it was done back then, so you can hear it for the first time since December 20, 1950! Our cast:

David Phillips in Virginia
Donna Patton in Tenessee
Trevor Rines in Canada
Sean Massey in Texas
Julie Hoverson in Washington
Dana Gonsalves in Texas
Scott McKinley in New Jersey
Ken Raney in Texas
and Larry Groebe did the heavy lifting

Old-Time Radio Essentials is back with episode 40, the 3rd installment of Season 4, and our fourth Holiday Special! Pete, Paul and Patte present an episode of the long-running Mutual series Nick Carter, Master Detective. This time it's Paul's pick, called "Nick Carter's Christmas Adventure"!  Will Pete dwell on technical details and miss the historical context? Will Patte compare this to something Canadian? Tune in and find out!

And since we're on the subject of finding things out, while you listen you'll learn if we feel this entry meets the following criteria:

1. Is it truly representative of that series? (Can anyone point to it and say, "Yes, that is what [NAME OF SERIES] was all about.")

2. Is it an episode worthy of inclusion in any and every OTR aficionado's private collection?

So with this in mind, we three bring you, as our fortieth number (but 3rd official episode of S4), this episode of Nick Carter, Master Detective, from 12/25/43. We'll introduce the show, play it in its entirety, then discuss it at length. Thanks for joining us, and we hope you enjoy it!

A FISH IN THE SEA PRODUCTIONS PRESENTS: The Screaming Skull

In the second annual edition of The Chilling Tales of Yuletide, we have a full-length adaptation of the 19th century short story, The Screaming Skull.

After the death of his friends, Dr and Mrs Pratt, Captain Braddock takes up residence in their former home. Yet he soon becomes convinced that the skull he found in the upstairs bedroom screams every night, haunting him, and that it was the cause of Dr Pratt's death. When investigators Miller and Shaughnessy (a believer and skeptic respectively) arrive to learn more about the situation on the night before Christmas Eve, Captain Braddock explains the haunting, as well as his theory that the skull belonged to Mrs Pratt and that her husband killed her. A half-tormented man himself, Captain Braddock is erratic in his explanations and retellings, and even Shaughnessy's skepticism is slowly put to the test as the haunting of the skull begins to drag them into the tale of murder and betrayal and guilty consciences.

Based on the story by Frances Marion Crawford and adapted by Lana O'Kell.

Sound Editor: Tori Taylor

Captain Charles Braddock: Pete Lutz

Miller: Joshua Chadwick

Shaughnessy: Lana O'Kell

Based on the hit stage play by George S. Kaufman and Moss Hart, and adapted for radio several times in the 1940s (and from two of which productions ours is derived), The Man Who Came to Dinner is a rollicking comedy that tells the story of a tyrannical celebrity who gets injured around Christmastime in a small town in Ohio; and of his eventual comeuppance by his friends and loved ones. Filled with colorful characters and comical situations, this is a Holiday Treat that can't be beat.

Dec 10, 2022

Continuing our special run of Christmas and holiday shows, we proudly present the latest release from our friends at Project Audion: My True Story: A Christmas to Remember.

Project Audion's December classic radio recreation is a lost episode from a virtually-lost series - how’s that for a Christmas present from the past! “My True Story" was on the air from 1943 to 1962 on three networks, but it's all but forgotten today, as maybe 10 vintage recordings survive from perhaps 5,000 original broadcasts!

A daily cousin to the daytime soap operas, "My True Story" produced a nearly hour-long complete drama five days a week - an astonishing achievement. Our Christmas Eve 1958 episode (#3,833), also titled "The Orphan In The Auditorium," asked the question, "What happens to a child who unexpectedly meets Santa Claus?"

It's full of poignant, heart-tugging emotion for the holidays, and was recreated from an original script saved by the 10 year old actress who played “Dot,” with a far-flung Zoom-based cast performing live…
