Sergeant Preston of the Yukon was one of the greatest juvenile adventure radio series ever - part of a trinity of kids' shows that originated from Station WXYZ in Detroit. (The other two were The Green Hornet and most famously, The Lone Ranger.)
For 16 years on the radio airwaves, Preston the Mountie and his dog Yukon King maintained law and order in the wilds of the frozen Northwest, racking up hundreds of red-blooded audio dramas before he and his huskies trekked to television. Project Audion has located a MISSING episode's script that originally aired on May 25, 1955 -- just two weeks before show ended its run. What's more, we are delighted to feature 94-year-old Chuck Daugherty, who was actually heard in some of the original Preston series episodes during his time at WXYZ over 70 years ago. He's part of a terrifically talented coast-to-coast cast for this episode, recorded live via Zoom.
OUR CAST:
Vincent Caruso in New York
Chuck Daugherty in Detroit, Michigan
Hunter Adkins in Salisbury, Maryland
Kyle Bonn in the wilds of Oregon
Frank Guglielmelli in Philadelphia
Glenn Hascall in Dodge City, Kansas
Craig Wichman in New York
and Larry Groebe (woof!) in Dallas, Texas

OLD-TIME RADIO ESSENTIALS Episode 50: Sherlock Holmes
Old-Time Radio Essentials returns with episode 50, our Season 5 premiere! Pete, Paul and Patte welcome Essential Listener Andy, who has suggested an episode of The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes, starring Gielgud and Richardson, entitled "The Final Problem." Come for the old-time radio, stay for the scintillating (that's one way of putting it) discussion afterwards!
As you listen, perhaps you'll learn if we feel this entry meets the following criteria:
1. Is it truly representative of that series? (Can anyone point to it and say, "Yes, that is what [NAME OF SERIES] was all about.")
2. Is it an episode worthy of inclusion in any and every OTR aficionado's private collection?
So with this in mind, we three bring you, as our fiftieth number (but 1st official episode of S5), this episode of Sherlock Holmes, from 4-17-55. We'll introduce the show, play it in its entirety, then discuss it at length. Thanks for joining us, and we hope you enjoy it!
Please show your support of the podcast by doing any of the following...
To comment on how we might improve OTR-E, or give suggestions for future discussions, please write to us at f6point3@gmail.com . Put the word "Essentials" in the subject line.
Your feedback means a lot to us! A review at iTunes or at your usual podcatcher would be appreciated.
Next Time: It's Patte's pick again, and she, being a Neighbour from the North, will finally bring us a Canadian example of OTR, an episode of Wayne & Shuster! Join us then, won't you?

Gunsmoke represents the rarest of phenomena in the annals of radio and television. It not only ran for decades, but it also introduced to the public a cast of characters that gradually took on mythic proportions and forever became part of the popular consciousness. SuZanne and Gabor Barabas, the authors of the preeminent book on the history of both the radio and television versions of Gunsmoke, were on hand at this live performance to talk afterward about the series and answer questions.
Frontier Gentleman was one of several "adult westerns," along with Gunsmoke and others, that appeared on radio and television in the early 1950s. The genre was described as "grittier, more realistic", and clearly intended for an older audience.

Welcome. Welcome to Mutant County! Lady Finger is a small town like any other. Nestled in the heart of a small county, the denizens are, for the most part, just like you and me. In fact, they could be you and me except for one important detail… or two.
Lady Finger and the surrounding hamlets that make up Clover County will – in the not too distant future – suffer massive nuclear fallout from a sudden reactor leak. Soon they will be quietly wondering if the radioactivity created the abominations that besiege their little community or indeed merely attracted them – perhaps from some unspeakable interdimensional rift.
By the time the Cultists take over the local graveyard and mysterious government agents impose an invisible barrier around the entire county “for their safety”, Clover County will be no more, and Mutant County will stand, festering, in its place. And yet the good people of the county remain, and they’d like to welcome you to their little village… be it ever so humble.
